There is no doubt that exercising is one of the keys to a healthy lifestyle. But with anything, too much of a good thing can have detrimental effects on the body and mind. This can lead to burnout, injury and even depression.

The experts say that adults should get about 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise and about 75 minutes of vigorous exercise. These are the recommendations that can help reduce cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Just because you do more, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll reap bigger rewards, such as increased weight loss, increased strength, etc. In fact, the latest research shows that you need to let your body rest and rcover periodically to avoid possible injury or long term damage.

Here are some signs your pushing too hard;

  • Prolonged discomfort of joints and muscles

  • Weakened immune system

  • Depression or anxiety

  • Continued fatigue

Know when too much is too much and what what the difference is between healthy and over-training.

  • Start slow, build up, it’s ok to tiptoe into an exercise program. In the long run your body will appreciate it with fewer injuries.

  • Switch between cadio and weight training, with breaks in between to allow your body to recover.

  • Exercise for healthy reasons and not allow it to define you and your self-esteem.

Remember, exercise is a very important part of a healthy lifestyle and over-training can lead to some serious health issues, both physical and mental. Your body will give you the signs, you just need to listen to it.
