Wellness Goals

As the each year comes to an end, we get excited about what the New Year is going to bring us.   We think about the different goals we want to set out to achieve, such as financial, health and wellness, spiritual, etc.  Let’s just focus on health and wellness goals at this time.  There is so much out there that we hear about, read or hear from friends, family or co-workers.  We’re not going to get caught up in the specifics of what to eat, drink, how much to exercise, but just a few simple guidelines to help keep you focused on your end results.

  1. Set Actual Goals

Goals help keep us on track, focused and keep random thoughts from distracting you from your desired results.  Goals should be finite and should give you a sense of encouragement and a desire to reach.  You want to be able to cross off your accomplishments and successes, but remember that you should have a couple of goals that you may not reach, but will hopefully get you to work harder on yourself.

  1. Get Specific

It’s too easy to just write down things you want to do, don’t get caught in that trap.  I want to lose weight, I want to eat healthier are a couple of examples of some ill-defined goals.  Try setting a definite weight goal of 10lbs a quarter depending on how much you would like to lose.  By setting more specific goals, it will keep you more focused and sets yourself up for success and keeps you encouraged to continue on your mission.

  1. Bite Size Larger Goals

There are some goals that are going to be a challenge and will stretch you to your limits.  In order to keep you on track to reach these larger goals you will need to break them down substantially in order to not get discouraged throughout the year.  Take a step back and see the big picture, stay focused and eat the elephant one bite at a time.  Remember, hitting the bite sized goals increases the chances of reaching the Big Ones.

You may have a list of goals a mile long, some long term and some short term goals, and that’s ok.  Just remember, not all goals are going to be achieved and it’s important that you understand that and don’t get discouraged.  Achieve one goal at a time and before you know it, you’re setting a whole new set of goals, with bigger and better outcomes.
